If you would like some further information on what a Congregational Church is, please visit the United Church of Christ website.
The Church Council In our church the congregation is the ruling body of the church and has the final say in all matters. The Church council is the representative body of the congregation. It is composed of the moderator, and the chairpersons of the board of deacons, board of education, the board of stewards, and at-large members. The council is the overall policy and planning board of the church. It supervises and coordinates the plans and activities of the boards and committees of the church. The council is responsible for discerning the needs of the membership and visions for the church. We strive to find opportunities for Christian witness within the church and its many outreach programs.
The Board of Stewards The Board of Stewards is responsible for the resources and gifts of the church. This means that the stewards support the work and visions of this church's ministries through our budget, building use and maintenance. It is important that the stewards have an awareness of the material aspects which go into operating a church by thoroughly understanding the implications of our budgets in order to aid all church members with their recognition of the church's operating needs and missionary outreach. The stewards are responsible for the benevolence distributions given to various agencies. The financial and material resources of this church can be a difficult area, but one in which the stewards continue to work in order to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in serving God within the wider community.
The Board of Deacons The Board of Deacons work with the Pastor to plan and direct the worship life of the Church. They discern the spiritual goals and implement programs and activities, such as visitation of members, fellowship and community-building activities, outreach, evangelism and church growth (including publicity and special events such as concerts) and mission and social justice. The Board also prepares and assists in the sacraments of the Lord’s Supper and Baptism, and encourages the active involvement of church members in worship (including children).
Trustees of the Center Church Home The Trustees of the Center Church Home is a separate corporation responsible for the distribution of funds from its own endowment income. The funds are distributed only for the needs of Center Church and to benefit the organizations that help the elderly in the New Haven area. Through the years we have given substantial sums to the Mary Wade Home, Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Partnerships, ICM Aging at Home Project, etc. All of these donations are in addition to the benevolence budget of the church.
The Board of Christian Education The Board of Christian Education is task to develop educational concepts and programs based upon: an understanding of how the church is empowered to educate a person for Christian life, including the church school and other dimensions of congregational life. The Christian Educational programs instill faith and discipleship amidst the various settings of life- family, work, the impact of science, technology, economics, and politics upon individuals and nations; and recognizing and opposing injustice in every form. Education at Center Church is informed and strengthened by racial, ethnic, cultural, and geographic diversity of its members. That diversity reflects the community in which we live. |
